The advantages of being a first mover in the industry is that the whole market is up for grab. The market is untapped and the company has the possibility of establishing monopoly or dominance. It even has time to make mistakes and learn from them and do course correction in their strategies. The learning curve that a company has when it is the first mover is totally different. They are entering the market with a blue ocean strategy in which they are not facing competition and can strategize according to their own whims and fancies or the vision set. The disadvantages are that the competitors will not have to do the same mistakes when then enter the market as they would have studied the company. Any strategy that the first mover implements can be easily copied and replicated by the competition. The competitors would do a thorough analysis of the strategies which have already been implemented and would find better ways of doing the things. These may include process innovation of technological advancement. (Investopedia, 2018)
Successful fist mover example is Coca-Cola. They were the first ones to enter and have been strong ever since. (Susan Fenner, 2018) Successful late mover examples are companies like Facebook which entered when the world was dominated by the likes of Orkut. Starbucks is another such example. Google is also an example. When it entered there were other search engines like Yahoo and Infoseek.
