Non Compliance with prescribed medications is one of the most prevalent issues in the healthcare sector which often results in treatments failures. When the patients do not take the advice of doctors or follow their recommendations, it is known as Non-Compliance. According to a survey by Consumer Reports (2014), 37% of doctors agreed that the noncompliance affects their ability to deliver optimal care (Wegmann, 2018). In the United States, out of approx 3.8 billion prescriptions written by the doctors annually, around 50% of the prescriptions are not taken appropriately. 75% of the admitted patients do not take their medicines as directed by the physicians. The intentional non-adherence accounts for 40-69% of unfavorable incidents resulting in hospital readmissions (Blackburn et al, 2013).
The reasons for noncompliance are inter-related and vary from person to person (Wegmann, 2018). They can be categorized into Physiological, Behavioral and Treatment-related factors.
