In "St Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" by Karen Russell, the idea of ‘home’ is the overarching theme that runs through the entire story. The main conflict for the characters is their inability and their constant desire to locate the place called home, first when they are uprooted from their cave dwelling and placed in St. Lucy’s, and then later when they return to their caves and find that their old dwellings and their families have taken on an alien, unfamiliar twinge.  
The green forest becomes the symbolic division between the dwellings of the wolves and the St.Lucy’s facility, which humanizes and socializes girls raised by these wolves. So, this forest also becomes the metaphoric tool that stands between the perceived barbarism of the girl and the civilization of the facility.
