NOTE: To solve this problem set as well as any other problem set, it will help if you draw your system
and identifying the energy component (property) changes and the energy interactions at the boundaries.
In some cases, you may need a sub system analysis to identify the energy interactions.
In all your solutions,
• clearly show your system definition with proper sketches indicating related energy flows
• clearly show how you write your equations (e.g., Mass, Energy, Entropy balance, etc.)

• use of definitions of power-energy relationships and efficiencies as needed

FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE RELATED TO THE CO-GENERATION SIMULATION SOFTWARE
GIVEN PAPERS, and RELATED LECTURE NOTES. YOU DO NOT NEED THE PROGRAM TO
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. BUT YOU CAN USE THE PROGRAM IF YOU WANT TO FOR THIS
ASSIGNMENT.
NOTES:
• In this homework assignment you should use graphs for the Energy Utilization factor and CO2
production rates per total energy load as a function of the HLRP that are available in the posted
papers and discussed in lectures. Also, note the graphs are taken from different papers and that
the legends may differ from that in the lecture. You are given a EUF vs HLRP graph for heating
and a second one for heating and cooling. The CO2 production rate per total energy load rate is
for both heating and cooling.
• If you are having difficulties with the provided code or downloading, please contact me or TA
immediately. Depending on the version of the program that you are using there may be
variations in the default parameters. If you are using the simulation program to answer any of
these problems, please state which version you are using (e.g. Windows, Mac, or Matlab). One
of the versions of the program has a bug. It does not clear all variables it needs to clear if you
un it with modified numbers a second time. You can check this if you run it third time without
changing anything, if the output changes (event though you did not change any input), please
un twice each time you modified any parameter.

Answer the following questions using the results presented in the lectures and the related papers
available within the Modules on Canvas.
Q1: For a small strip mall, the owner has reported an average electrical power requirement of 1500 kW
and a heating load of 750 kW under winter conditions. The owner is considering installing a Co-
Generation system with a installed power output capacity of 1500 kW as a means of conserving energy
and controlling costs. NOTE: This is a single design point problem. i.e., only one set of conditions.
Determine
A) the HLRP (Thermal load to power load ratio) for this average condition
B) the first law energy utilization factor
C) ca
on dioxide production for this installation.
D) Confirm air flow through the fuel cells is 100% for the installed Co-Generation system.
Q2: For the same strip mall consider installing a larger Co-Generation unit where the air flow through
the fuel cell is 50%. In this case, the maximum power that could be produced by the Co-Generation is
3000 kW while only 1500 kW is required. i.e., This is a part load situation.
Determine
A) the first law energy utilization factor and compare it to solution in Q2
B) and ca
on dioxide production and compare it to solution in Q2.
Q3: For the same strip mall, the summer energy requirements are 1500 kW of electrical power, 75 kW
of heating, 675 kW of cooling. The cooling load will be supplied using a vapor compression refrigerator
that is driven by electrical power that is included in the reported results in the papers/code. You do not
have to include this additional power requirement because it is included in the analysis. For the
installed Co-Generation system, the installed peak power output is 1800 kW and the above conditions
have less than a 100% air flow through the fuel cells. NOTE: This is a single design point problem. i.e.,
only one set of conditions.
