The assignment this week will be to develop a concept map showing the outline of a unit you could create that would accomplish the integration of teaching a content unit from your curriculum with accompanying skills from developmentally appropriate SEL standards. You are encouraged to use the learnings from previous assignments (such as developmentally appropriate benchmarks, attention to equity and diversity, effective measurement tools for SEL skills, etc.) to get you started. You are not writing lesson plans at this time, but mapping out the standards to be accomplished, both social and content knowledge, as well as making some choices about what kind of delivery would work to allow students to both learn and practice the skills needed to master both objectives. This assignment may serve as a roadmap to your Signature Assignment in Week 8.
Your unit should include four lessons and an assessment. It can be in a bulleted or outlined format but must include four sequential academic content lessons that build toward mastery of a content standard as well as four sequential SEL lessons that build toward mastery of an SEL standard. The unit must include these components:
State the dual standards – content and SEL skill (cite sources). Describe four different lesson objectives that build sequentially toward mastery of the content and SEL standards. Within each of the lessons, describe the teacher content delivery choices with reasons for why you chose them (e.g., direct instruction with talk-back so I can model for students my decision-making, or role-play in partners with explicit directions on how to give feedback to one another so students can practice giving and receiving feedback while I can monitor, etc.). At the end of the four lessons, describe the assessment measure you will use to determine mastery of the dual standards. (There might be two separate measurement tools, or they might be combined.) Create this as a presentation, with each slide showing the content and SEL information side by side (i.e., standards side by side on one slide, objectives, content delivery/activity choices, assessment measure, etc.).
At the end, please write a 1-page reflection of how comfortable you felt creating this assignment. What were the greatest challenges and rewards? What is your feeling about creating dual-standard lessons like this for your educational practice?
Length: 4-5 slides, not including title and reference slides, 1-page reflection
