Executive summary:
In 2012 the Commonwealth government of Australia introduced plain packaging to cigarettes. Designed to reduce the level of smoking in the community the move generated a large amount of discussion. According to some, it’s a great move as it will lead to reduction in the consumption of cigarette by making the product less attractive whereas the tobacco industry is against this move as it hurts their business. In this paper, we are going to show, by applying the basic economics principle, how this move is good for the Australians. However, if this move turns out to be a success, then all the countries will not lag behind and will also implement this in their respective countries to reduce the harmful effect of smoking on their people.
Introduction:
In April 2010, the Australian Government announced that it would introduce legislation to mandate plain packaging of tobacco products from 1 January 2012 with full implementation by 1 December 2012.
Under the new laws, all cigarettes must be sold in drab olive-
own packets with large, graphic health warnings.
Thus, according to plain packaging for tobacco, cigarette packs and tobacco pouches will have much larger pictorial health warnings and the colors and design of the packs will also be standardized where tobacco
and names will be printed in standard type fonts and sizes.
The Government has implemented this to reduce smoking and its harmful effects.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates “15,500 Australians are killed by tobacco-related diseases every year and says passive smoking affects the health of children”.
