Social Explorer has different maps of social data available to the public. These maps use various data sources, including census data. For this discussion post, explore the global map of World Development Indicators, in this case Gross Domestic Product, or GDP ("the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period"). Hover your cursor over different countries to view their GDPs.
After you have explored the map, answer these 5 questions:
1. What are your initial observations for certain continents, regions and individual countries? Choose 2 of each (2 continents, 2 regions, and 2 individual countries) to focus on.
2. Considering the concepts of poverty and global stratification from Chapter 10, define modernization theory and dependency theory.
3. Compare and contrast modernization theory and dependency theory in your own words. How are they similar? How are they different?
4. Using the map you have explored, evaluate how both modernization theory and dependency theory explain global economic disparity.
5. Do you think culture can come into direct conflict with economic growth? In your answer, consider the role a difference in values might play.
Note: You have access to Social Explorer via the Newman Li
ary at Baruch College, which also serves SPS students. See the “Newman Li
ary” tab on Blackboard (on top of the page) for more details.
