Assessment Description:
This assessment builds on Assessment 2. In that assessment, you developed part of the research
proposal by formulating a research topic, providing an introduction and justification for the research,
and reviewing the literature on your topic.
In this assessment, you will finalise your research proposal by developing the methodology part of
your research. In order to do this effectively, you should follow the structure below.
Structure of the paper

• State your research topic clearly at the start of the paper

• Provide an introduction to the research – justification for the research; research questions (at
least 5 questions are recommended). (This information should be adapted from Assessment 2 and
ased on assessment 2 feedback).

• Engage in a
ief, critical review of the literature. This information will come from Assessment 2.
It should be
ief and take into consideration the feedback provided to you in that assessment.
The review should discuss what previous research has said about your topic and the gaps that you
are trying to fill by ca
ying out this study.

• Discussion of methodology: This is the main part of this assessment. Students must engage in an
in-depth discussion of their chosen methodology. This would include:

o The data collection methods and justification for those methods: the specific
instruments used to collect the data (for example, interviews, questionnaires,
observation, focus groups etc). Remember, you don’t have to use all of the methods, you
just need to choose the one(s) that are most suitable for your chosen topic
o Sampling – what sampling strategy would you use; sample size (for this study, it is limited
to between 0 – 10 participants); how will you recruit your sample (that is, how will you get
access to the sample) etc
o Analysis of the data – explain how you plan to analyse the data. Since most qualitative
data would be coded and categorised, it would be useful to explain how you would go
about doing this - what would you be looking for? For example, based on your particular
topic and research questions, you might expect certain themes to emerge (you should
have an idea of these from your review of the literature) and these themes can be
discussed as examples during your discussion of the coding process. The main idea here
is to show the examiner that you understand the process of coding of qualitative data. In
addition, if there are particular techniques of data analysis recommended by your
theoretical framework, you should incorporate those into the discussion.

Introduction
As the use of social media among the young generation continues to increase, it has drawn attention of many researchers and has turned out to be a prominent field of research with a particular focus on the impact of mental health of adolescents making use of social media platforms. The excessive and uncontrolled use of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok is considered to be one of the primary causes of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among the young generation. Through these platforms adolescents are continuously being bullied, and are subjected to unrealistic social comparison and portrayal of life. This study has been conducted with a particular focus on the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents in Birmingham, UK. The primary goal of this research is to develop a better understanding of perception of adolescents and the poor psychological impact of social media.
Justification for the Research
    The research is justified owing to the increasing mental issues among adolescents primarily due to increased exposure to social media platforms. The study will make its valuable contributions towards developing a
oader and better understanding of the impact of increasing use of social media platforms on the mental health of the youth. The insights offered by the study can be used to come up with necessary policies, and interventions, and will contribute towards future research as well. With its focus on the u

Critical Review of the Literature
There have been several investigations being made to the develop a relationship between the use of social media and mental health of the adolescents. In a study conducted by Lavis and Winter (2020) the inverse relationship between the use of social media and satisfaction levels and happiness of adolescents has been established. The findings of the research further highlighted the co
elation existing between the extensive use of social media and the increased levels of depression and anxiety.
Another study conducted by Bennet and Hunter (2022), have shed light on social media comparison and the impact it has on the mental health of adolescents. The insights gained from this study indicate that comparison of individuals with their peers, who are superior to them have a negative impact on the mental well-being. In another study by Eisenstadt et al. (2020), qualitative methods have been deployed to understand the perception of adolescents on the use of social media and how it impacts their mental health. The study indicated that use of social media platforms can help adolescents with social support but at the same time creates an environment of stress and anxiety.
Strommer et al. (2022) have further highlighted that social media also provides the youth with ability to develop social connection, seek social support, and express their opinions and views on critical topics and debates. Though the study has largely considered the positive impact of social media it does not denies the fact that social media negatively impact the mental well-being of adolescents particularly when these youngsters try to idealise their lives.
