A physical network is the sum of the physical hardware parts that make up a network, including cables and routers which are linked together in a network system in data transfer, processing and storage. Physical network can be used for different purposes which can include personal and domestic use and also for official and business purposes. There are several different types of computer networks. Computer networks can be characterized by their size as well as their purpose and can vary from being in a single room or a premises to various countries spread across continents. The most popular physical network being used today are as follows.
1. Personal Area Network (PAN)
2. Local Area Network (LAN)
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
4. Wide Area Network (WAN)
5. Wireless LAN (WLAN)
6. Virtual Private Network (VPN)
7. Storage Area Network (SAN)
8. Enterprise Internal Private Network
9. Campus Area Network
10. System Area Network
The first five in the above list is classified on the basis of size of the network and the ones from 6 to 8 is classified on the basis of purpose of their usage.
PAN, LAN, WLAN are the networks which are also used for personal use in residences. Through Lan we can connect multiple devise like computers, printers’ scanners etc. in our homes for various uses. MAN is used as a networking system in particular locality, or college campuses or even in the entire city networking. MAN comprises of many LAN connected together to cater to a larger area.
