Essay: You must be able to answer all parts of the following essays. Of the three, one (or a
combination) will appear on the exam which you will answer from memory. 50 points.
1. Compare and contrast the growth and development of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay. Based
on information in lectures and from your readings develop an argument that demonstrates
the significance of each country, their leadership, and overall impact on West Africa and
Europe during the height of their political advancement. Be sure to provide examples to
support your choices and include as many details and examples as possible in a Clearly
Written and Well-Organized response.
2. Compare and contrast the institution of slavery from the perspective of Africa and
Europe. What were the basic structures of each and discuss the ways in which the
institution changed over time and the impact of the Atlantic slave trade on Africa,
Europe and the "New World." Be sure to discuss the means by which men and women
were enslaved, the methods used by whites to obtain and distribute men, women and
children and the ways Africans responded to the European slave trade. Also, talk about
the ways the enslaved resisted their enslavement from the shores of Africa to thei
placement in the Cari
ean and North America. Be sure to provide examples to
support your choices and include as many details and examples as possible in a Clearly

3. Based on information in lectures and from your readings discuss the transition of slavery
in the New World from indentured servitude to racialized enslavement that focused on
Black bodies and the significance of this transition. How and why did this occur and what
was the overall response from both the Black and white population and how did the
former resist this type of subjugation? What did resistance look like and what was its
overall impact? Be sure to provide examples to support your choices and be sure to
include as many details and examples as possible in a Clearly Written and Well
Organized response.
