This assignment will assess competency 5. Create strategies and policies to ensure effectiveness.

Directions

In LP04 you were all asked to create a cover letter and a resume. These are two of the most important tools that you can use for getting an interview for that job. Cover letters and resumes are also two of the most challenging things to write. Knowing what to look for in someone else’s cover letter and resume can help you identify areas where you can improve your own self-marketing tools.

For this exercise you will be put in teams to provide resume and cover letter analyses. Each student will receive a team member’s cover letter and resume (your instructor will facilitate this) and compare it with the job posting for which these were created. Imagine that you are the hiring manager for this position. Read your teammate’s cover letter and resume and determine whether or not this person is a good fit for the position. Your analysis should address the following areas:

  1. Does the resume and cover letter meet the job description requirements (i.e., are they tailored to the job posting)?
  2. Has your teammate used key words appropriately?
  3. Has your teammate presented an organized, aesthetically pleasing and clean (no writing errors) resume of 1 to 2 pages?
  4. Has your teammate used space efficiently?
  5. Did your teammate write with consistency (e.g. verb tense)?
  6. Does the cover letter grab your attention? Does it make you feel that you need to review the resume?
  7. Do the cover letter and resume give you a sense that the applicant is professionally qualified and competent?
  8. Do you have any concerns over the applicant’s communication or writing skills?
  9. Is this a person you would hire for the job? Why or why not?

Your answers to each question should include an explanation to support your answer, not just “yes” or “no.” Your responses should be constructive and provide suggestions on how to improve. Provide at least two strengths and two areas for improvement
