In this second assessment, you are required to articulate your knowledge of health as a
societal issue, and the role of the nurse in addressing community health issues.
Health care is changing rapidly around the world, as communities and populations deal
with global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, political unrest and
war. Hence, the role of the nurse is advancing, and this requires nurses to understand
how their roles will evolve over the coming years and decades. In this assessment,
students will be required to explain how nurses can participate in community
engagement through partnerships with stakeholders to meet the diverse health and
well-being needs of communities and/or populations.
For this assessment item you will have the choice of examining a health issue in
the Australian or global context.

Topic: Refugee health:
Migrant and refugee health, in the sustainable development goals, focuses on SDG 3 on
health and its interlinkages to SDG 1, 5 and 17 and SDG 8, 10, 11 and 16. Over half of all
efugees under UNHCR’s mandate and other people in need of international protection
come from just three countries. Syrian Arab Republic – 6.5 million, Afghanistan – 6.1
million, Ukraine – 5.9 million. The Islamic Republic of Iran and Türkiye each hosted 3.4
million refugees, the largest populations worldwide.
1. Australian community – Yazidi people living in Toowoomba (relational and
geographical community). The Yazidi people are a Kurdish religious minority
found primarily in northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey, northern Syria, the
Caucasus region, and parts of Iran.
2. Global community – Karen refugees from Myanmar living in Thailand refugee
camps (relational and geographical community).

community in the selected setting. Provide specific examples of strategies and
interventions that could be employed.
2. Explain how nurses can engage with the selected community through partnerships
with relevant stakeholders, such as local government, non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), and other healthcare providers.
2a. Describe how these partnerships can enhance healthcare delivery and improve
health outcomes for the community.
3. Reflect on the evolving role of healthcare in communities. How might the nurse's
ole change to address future challenges in such settings?
3a. Include in your discussion potential shifts in responsibilities, required skills, and
areas for professional development.
