Journal of Rembrandt 
Today I am willing to convey some of my deep feelings to all of the spectators who 
have always shown eagerness to view my paintings, appreciate them, and have always 
admired my creation. These spectators say that nobody had ever painted the self portrait 
as distinctly and thoroughly as Rembrandt. I don’t know whether I am the best among 
my contemporaries, but being Rembrandt I have understood that I have some specific 
responsibilities towards my spectators and admirers and that is the reason why I always 
try to give thorough effort in every painting of mine. I must confess that among all the 
subjects of painting, for me, having myself as the subject is the most crucial one and that 
is the reason why till now I have already sketched my own face more than hundred 
times.  
Today I must reveal before my readers that I have created the 60 self portraits to 
depict the history of my own life and through these compositions I have endeavored to 
bring in front of the eyes of my spectators the autobiographical story that chronicles my 
turbulent life (“The Self-Portrait as Self-Study”, n.d.). I have always believed that 
through painting the self an artist can study all the moods and changes that has ushered 
in his life and as this is so, I, through my self-portrait, have tried to reveal the story of 
my life, a story of rag to riches, a story depicting marriages and mistresses,
