What do I need to do?
First, download the template. Edit this file as you complete your assignment, entering in your responses to the weekly questions and adding your own questions and sample answers in the relevant sections. Remember to save your work regularly. When you have finished you assignment, upload the completed template as your assignment submission.
The assignment is
oken into weekly sections, each section consisting of two tasks. Your first task is to answer the assignment questions - there is one for each week. The answers to the questions can be found in the text, but you must respond in your own words. Each response is marked out of 1.5 marks: the marking criteria are in the template.
Your second task for each week is to develop your own short-answer question and sample answer. This question should be relevant to the topics covered for the particular week, so for example, in week one, you could develop a question relating to anything from hardware components, basic network communication/terminology through to network models which can be found in chapter one. Try to base the question on an area of content that you found challenging. Imagine if you were writing an exam for the unit: what questions would you ask? Use your imagination and make sure you use your own words for both the question and the sample answer. Each question/sample answer is marked out of 1.5 marks: the marking criteria are in the template.
The assignment is marked out of 30 and forms 30% of your total unit marks.
Hints
Hint 1: Example Sample Question/Answer (Detail)
The following is an example of the type of question you might develop and the level of detail required in the sample answer. Note the level of detail in the answer is similar to that expected of you in most weekly assignment question responses.
Question: What is the difference between an incremental and a differential backup?
Answer: An incremental backup will copy all files changed since the last full or incremental backup and mark these files as backed up. A differential backup will copy all files changed since the last full backup; but won't mark the files as being backed up. When restoring an incremental backup, each backup since the last full backup must be restored in sequential order, ending at the latest incremental backup. With a differential backup, however, only the last full backup and the last successful differential backup need to be restored.
Hint 2: Do a bit every week
This assignment is not onerous, especially if you complete each weekly section as you complete each week of the unit. However, it will be much harder if you try to complete all the sections in week eleven!
Hint 3: Ask!
If something in this assignment description is unclear, or you are just not 100% sure about something, please ask for help. Your teaching team really do not mind if you ask us to clarify something. We do mind when we have to fail you because you haven't submitted what was asked or met the assignment requirements

Week Two
Assignment Question:
Sebastian’s Sea Creatures has 25 workstations in their administration office. You are the IT manager for the company and Sebastian has asked you to replace the 300Mbps wireless access point (AP) that services the office with a 100Mbps switch. Will this increase or decrease the bandwidth available to each workstation? Explain your reasoning by including estimates of effective bandwidth for each case.

Week Three
Assignment Question:
There are two other LANs at Sebastian’s Sea Creatures, one for the café (called CAFE) and one for the admissions gate (called GATE). There are 5 workstations on each LAN. On CAFE, the workstations connect to a 100Mbps hub. On GATE, the workstations connect to a 100Mbs switch with all ports operating in half-duplex mode. If you connected your laptop to GATE, would it be subject to more, the same or less collisions than if it was connected to CAFE? You can assume data rates and traffic patterns are the same on each LAN. Justify your answer by explaining the origin of the collisions.

Assignment Question:
Back at Sebastian’s Sea Creatures, you are trying to determine if a switch is working properly. Its switching table has the following entries:
MAC Address
Port #
00-25-2A-00-00-0F
4
00-25-2A-00-10-FC
1
00-25-2A-00-00-DD
2
00-25-2A XXXXXXXXXX
3
Port 3 is connected to a hub.
During your testing, the following events occur:
1. The entry for 00-25-2A-00-10-FC expires.
2. An addition device XXXXXXXXXX2A XXXXXXXXXXis connected to the hub on port 3.
3. A new virtualised machine XXXXXXXXXX2A-AA-10-0C) is started on the server connected to port 2
4. Device XXXXXXXXXX2A XXXXXXXXXXis disconnected from the hub on port 3 and connected to port 5.
Draw the switching table that you’d expect to see at the end of these events. The order of entries is unimportant:
