Explore and reflect on how best to assess, advocate and support the needs of people who are approaching the end of life and their families. Critically reflect on how to provide culturally safe end of life care informed through the differing perspectives of the many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples nations.

This essay enables you to consider how best to reflect and understand yourself and to recognise, advocate and address the needs of those who are dependent on you.

In this paper you must;
1. Respectfully compare and contrast culturally and/or spiritually different views that describe what is important in the passage of life to death that will enable a 'good death'. You are required to consider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and give examples of non-Indigenous cultural perspectives.
2. Propose two (2) evidence based strategies to promote respect, dignity and inclusion in decision making including palliative, end of life care and or VAD for older people
3. Discuss the role of the registered nurse in facilitating/implementing these strategies.

Introduction
	There are various aspects of healthcare and end-of-life care is a critical aspect, which is dependent on sensitivity towards cultural and spiritual needs. Particularly focusing on Australia, it has a multicultural society and therefore there is a need to provide care that is in line with the cultural values and beliefs of people coming from different communities specifically the indigenous community including the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander people. For these communities, the concepts of life, death, and afterlife are deeply aligned with their cultural roots and their spiritual beliefs (Murrup-Stewart et al., 2021). In this case, healthcare nurses play a crucial role to ensure that end-of-life care is delivered dignified and respectful manner. This essay will discuss about the provision of culturally safe end-of-life care and will compare it with the perspective of the non-indigenous communities. The essay will further propose evidence-based strategies to ensure inclusion and the roles of nurses in eliminating biases. 
Culturally and Spiritually Different Views on a “Good Death”
	Different cultured have different perspectives regarding the concept of good death. For the indigenous communities of Australia, death is not the end of human life rather it signifies a transition from one state of existence to the other. For these people, death is closely related to their spiritual beliefs and is connected to their land. Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander people follow rituals such as “Sorry Business” wherein the entire community is mourning over the death of an individual to honour the deceased and to show support towards their family. The elderly people in these communities guide the rituals after death to help the family transition from one phase to another. They ensure that there is no compromise being made with the cultural practices (Smith et al., 2021). 
	In contrast to this perspective, the non-indigenous communities prefer autonomy and individuality in the process of dying. “Good Death” for these communities simply refer to the management of pain, to the quality of care being provided and the presence of their loved ones in the time when they are moving towards the end of life. Furthermore, this can also be linked to informed decision-making, wherein advanced medical practices ensure that wish of the patient is provided utmost importance and every possible effort must be made to minimise their pain.
