As these decisions have direct and lasting impacts on your organisation, you must be aware of distortions that may influence the quality of your decisions and use decision-making techniques such as mind-mapping, dialogue mapping, six thinking hats, and the soft system methodology, and/or employ information technologies such as big data analytics and artificial intelligence to improve decision-making processes.


In this assessment, you will produce a report explaining a decision-making process. The process can be one that you were personally involved in, or it can be described from a third-person perspective.

2.Assignment Rationale


Although managers attempt to make rational and agile decisions, some unconscious distortions can influence their decisions. Explaining the decision-making process using Simon’s normative model allows you to identify the distortions and factors affecting the quality of your decisions and mitigate them by adopting effective decision-making techniques and technology.This assessment will assess your skills in critically analysing and evaluating situations and enable you to apply decision-making techniques to make quality decisions in authentic business problems.




3.Instructions


Select a decision that has been made in a complex decision-making workplace environment. This decision can either be one that you have taken part in at your workplace or one that you find from research of real-world examples.


In your analysis of your selected decision, undertake the following:



  • Describe the problem/ opportunity requiring a decision.

  • Explain the decision-making process using Simon’s normative model (intelligence, design, choice, and implementation).

  • Discuss the distortions that influenced the quality of the decision.

My experience:


In December 2022, I arrived in Perth with my wife and two children to upgrade my qualifications and provide my children with the opportunity to learn about Western culture and education. Initially, we stayed with relatives. After a few months, we began searching for a house to rent for a few years. The rental market in Perth was highly competitive, and it took nearly a year to find a suitable house. Despite multiple applications through online platforms like Realestate.com.au and Domain.com.au, I faced numerous rejections due to high competition and my inability to bid higher rent. Eventually, I secured a house by offering more rent and providing all necessary documents as required by the real estate agent, Next-Move.

For more education and better exposure to my children to western culture and education, in December 2022, I migrated to Perth with my wife and two children. On a

With the passage of time, the issue of the accommodation’s permanency again was becoming an important one. However, as it was found out later on, the tempo of the rental market in Perth was highly saturated and therefore trying to secure a noble house was not an easy task to undertake. Several months of job hunting, several job applications and several rejections showed that such jobs were few and far between and due to rising competition, coupled with my inability to offer higher rent for properties, the market was a major hurdle. Still, the firm has been active and used other online tools such as Realestate. com. au and Domain. com. au, however, I never got a house until I tendered a higher rent than my friends and accompanied the documents that a real estate agent required.
1.2 Decision Overview
The most important choice in this case concerned the strategy of selecting a rental property in a very competitive environment. The main purpose was to select the house which would be suitable for our family and survive in such conditions of competition. In assessing and selecting various properties, evaluating the competitiveness of offer strategy and later on in selecting the strategy of increasing the rent offer form parts of the decision making process.
2. Decision-Making Process
In this section, I will analyze the decision-making process using Simon’s normative model, which includes four key phases: , Simons (1999) identified procedural justice asserting that employees desire and value intelligence, design, choice and implementation.
2.1 Intelligence Phase
The intelligence phase involved research done on the rental market in Perth and the factors that affect the supply of house and housing rents. At this stage it was possible to notice that the issue of renting the houses was a highly competitive one because there were many customer interested in the limited numbers of houses available. Some of the factors that contributed to this included population density that was occasioned by immigration into the region, lack of sufficient stocks of accommodation within the region as well as upsurge in rents.
This phase also included established the specific needs of my family including; Schools, transport and other important facilities in the community. Also, I evaluated our financial strength in order to establish our ability to afford any rent price and any other expenses that could be incu
ed in order to secure premises.
2.2 Design Phase
At the design stage it was important to come up with other strategies for acquiring a rental house. The primary alternatives considered were: The primary alternatives considered were:

ying on with the ritual of applying for lodging through the web with the aim of being selected one lucky day without having to offer a higher rent.
· Increasing the rent offer: Gives out a higher rent to increase chances of our application as compared with other applications.
· Exploring other housing options: Example of using other living situations, which may include moving and renting a place with other people.
In this phase, the criteria to be used to measure these alternatives were defined Though this was not a sub-phase of selection, it was closely linked with it. Such criteria were the prospects of obtaining an object, its cost, and relevance for the family’s needs and desires.
2.3 Choice Phase
The last step, the choice phase, was used to identify which out of the specific strategies defined in the design phase was suitable for the given criteria. After serious thinking it was decided to raise the rent offer slightly. This move was informed by the fact that the market was cut throat and in order to secure a chance, one had to be tough in the application process. The higher offer of rent was considered appropriate in an endeavour to achieve the main mission of getting a befitting rental house in shortest time possible.
