Introduction
To ensure the holistic development of a child including social and emotional development, it is essential that the child is provided with an inclusive and nurturing learning environment since childhood through early education setting (Zabeli & Gjelaj, 2020). This is critically important when the child is facing challenges associated with change of culture, language issues, and emotional distress. This assessment takes into consideration the case study of Mia, who is a 4-year-old child, recently migrated from China. Mia has been experiencing anxiety, bedwetting, and is showing signs of resistance to engage in her kindergarten. Therefore, there is a sheer need to create a supportive environment for Mia. An ecomap has been used here to access the social and emotional learning strengths of Mia. A tailored learning environment design has also been proposed considering the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). The key objectives considered for coming up with the ecomap and the tailored learning environment are to build the confidence of Mia, to develop strong relationships with Mia and her family, and to support her family to be active participants in the learning journey of Mia.
Step1: Social and Emotional Learning Strengths and Needs
Ecomap Analysis
An ecomap in early childhood education setting refers to ta visual representation of the connection of the family to the external world. Ecomap is a useful tool for assessing the relationship between family, society, and community (Park, Horn & Kurth, 2023). This further helps to understand the impact of social and environmental factors on the development of a child. In the case of Mia, ecomap highlights the strengths, challenges, and complexities existing for Mia in her home, school, and the community.
Family Dynamics
· Strengths: Parents of Mia have a supportive and collaborative nature as they are ready to interact with the teachers to create a supportive learning environment for Mia. Her parents provide Mia with a loving and caring environment at home. They also communicate in Cantonese to preserve their culture.
· Needs: The family has been facing several changes in the recent times, making it difficult for Mia to navigate through these changes. The family suddenly shifted to Gippsland, and Mia lost her grandmother, to whom she was deeply attached. These changes have led to emotional instability, and anxiety for Mia.
Community Connections
· Strengths: the kindergarten chosen for Mia is easily accessible as it is at a walking distance from her home. Also, the environment of Gippsland is soothing, and relaxing and offers a hustle free lifestyle as compared to Melbourne.
· Needs: Mia has been facing the issue of social isolation owing to her limited social interaction in Melbourne apart from her cultural circle. This has been making it difficult for Mia to involve with peers who are not part of her culture or speak her mother tongue.
Language and Culture
· Strengths: Mia speaks Cantonese with fluency, and therefore this has to be the base for her to learn English as the second language. To build resilience, it is essential to value her cultural identity.
· Needs: Mia is reluctant to speak English, and has the fear that she might make mistakes while learning the language. Therefore, there is a need to create a learning environment that is rich in languages and integrates the cultural background of Mia.
Emotional Development
· Strengths: Mia has been showing signs of her ability to connect emotionally with people as she had a deep emotional connection with her grandmother.
· Needs: Mia needs emotional support, which is evident from her behaviour such as separation anxiety, social withdrawal, and regressive behaviour including bedwetting. Also, in this case strategies need to be implemented for building resilience as well.
