0.1 kg of air in the cylinder of a compression ignition (CI) engine undergoes polytropic compression during which the volume decrease 16 times and the pressure increases 45 times. If the initial temperature is 320 K, determine   (a) The polytropic index of the compression process   (b) Temperature of the air at the end of compression   (c) Compression work   (d) Change of internal energy, enthalpy ant entropy   (e) Heat added to the process

Solution
1. Calculation of polytropic index of the compression process:
log [ P1/P2] = n log [V2/V1] ------ [1]
here, P1 = initial pressure
P2 = Final pressure
V1 = Initial Volume
V2 = Final Volume
As P increases 45 times and V decreases 16 times,
So, n or polytropic index =
log [1/45] = n log [1/16]
or, n = log [1/45]/ log [1/16]
on solving we get, n =0.35
2. Temperature of the air after compression:
P1V1/T1 = P2 V2 /T2
T2...
